Micro/Macro

A number of particles in space seem to an external observer to have purpose, because they move in repeated and predictable patterns.

The particles themselves also believe that they have purpose and go about their molecular lives carrying out minor purposes with the hope of fulfilling their ultimate purpose.

And they do have a purpose, but it's not the purpose the observer guesses, and it's not the purpose the particles believe in, it's another purpose entirely.

So they drive home or go to work, for example, believing that what they're doing has meaning, when in actuality they are there for a completely different reason - because something had to fill that space long enough, for instance, to keep the universe from collapsing.
